Choices

The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.
~Socrates

I’m confused. Decision making is difficult.

Sometimes there are no right or wrong answers.

Finding a solution to a predicament creates different scenarios, each making perfect sense. The tricky part is choosing the right one.

Inspiring words about contentment are whirling around in my brain.

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not.
~Ann Brashares

Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re real quite lucky.
~Dr Seuss

At some point, you gotta let go, and sit still, and allow contentment to come to you.
~Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.
~Lao Tzu

But I’m also hearing words urging me to leap out of my comfort zone and take chances.

If you dare nothing,
then when the day is over,
nothing is all you will have gained.
~Neil Gaiman, The Graveyard Book

A ship is always safe at the shore – but that is NOT what it is built for.
~Albert Einstein

Don’t be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

But he’d learned long ago that a life lived without risks pretty much wasn’t worth living. Life rewarded courage, even when that first step was taken neck-deep in fear.
~Tamera Alexander, Within My Heart

Maybe I’ll spend time pondering Picasso’s words and see what transpires.

Everything you can imagine is real.

  1. Sometimes, the best way to make a choice is by not thinking about it for a while, and listening to your heart. I had a leadlight autumn leaf ornament once, many years ago, with the words “Let Go and Let God” written on it. I’ve taken advantage of this idea so many times over the years. If a problem is too big, or a decision too hard to make, I let it go, leave it in God’s hands, and the answer becomes clear. I wish you well Jenna, as always. ❤

  2. 🙂 Me too. Sometimes my heart is a little ahead of my brain. Perhaps there is no right or wrong.. I had a coach once who said “What if we just did what we really wanted..not what we should..” Like the comment about living.
    Much love!

  3. I sympathize with you, it’s so hard to make a decision about something that has many logical options. It can get even more confusing when you think about all those conflicting words of wisdom. I always wish I could see alternate realities of what each decision would bring – that would make it so easy! Good luck – I’m sure you’ll make the right decision.

  4. When it’s more frightening to stay put – as is – than to move forward, you’ll take the plunge. Until then, enjoy the quiet of discernment with patient trust. Blessings…

  5. Some truly wonderful quotes you’ve compiled for this post, Jenna. Keepers! I can feel your ambivalence. I tend to act like the latter list, but when I feel the former I go for a walk, sit by the water and the answer usually comes to me, bouncing me back to the latter again! I love hitandrun19’s comment – couldn’t have put it better myself!

  6. Ooo…tricky when you have awesome quotes which speak the truth about both sides. Hmm..I think this is where we are asked to practice discernment and sometimes just sitting with it..not thinking about it…going with the feeling…helps.

Sigh…discernment can be so hard…and I agree with Ruth Rainwater…not to over think the options 🙂

  7. There is no right or wrong here. But I do love this quote from our friend anon.
“Life at its best is a series of challenges. A big enough challenge will bring out strengths and abilities you never knew you had. Take on a challenge and you will bring yourself to life.”
The right challenge will make your heart sing … and yes there will be some fear in there as well. They go hand in hand 🙂

    1. I think you have answered my dilemma Val in saying “The right challenge will make your heart sing”. Because I’m feeling doubts it means I haven’t found the right challenge yet. Love to you from Jenna

  8. Find your passion and just GO after it + don’t worry about the rest because you will take risks naturally!…Your passion is that “thing” that swallows your time..where you are creating, working, helping, or doing something + 5 hours seems like just 1 + your energy is on fire…you don’t tire because it feels right…….you will take risks naturally + hold back when needed…that is “contentment:-)

  9. This isn’t going to help much, I’m afraid, but sometimes I didn’t know if the answer was right or not until after I made the decision. Faith in your own gut and a willingness to jump sometimes is all you have. But there was usually a feeling that pulled me in one direction more than another.

There were two big decisions that come to mind. One was whether to quit a job and go to grad school, with a toddler and a pregnant wife at home, and a problem pregnancy. It meant moving across the country. We went, and it turned out well. Our lives were completely different after that, in every single way. Richer. Not easier, but more interesting. It was only in hindsight that I knew it was the right thing to do. The other was whether to start a small business. That, too changed our lives radically, and it wasn’t easy. But in hindsight, the changes were what brought entirely new opportunities and experiences. It was just different, but better.

  10. Dear friend you can’t THINK life, you just have to LIVE it. All the words are worth nothing. Just get up each morning and go…stop chasing your tail and thinking. Questions just lead to more questions. Do what you feel like doing, go where you want to go next. No one who writes their opinion (including me) has any idea what it’s like to live someone else’s life. They don’t have answers for anyone but themselves. You already know. You just have to trust yourself. If you fall down, get up laughing. Take risks or don’t, up to you. I always walk off the edge and expect the net to be there or don’t care if it’s not but that’s me. If you like orderly things and things that are safer, then do that. One IS NOT BETTER THAN THE OTHER, they are simply different choices…because we are not all the same…we are each different and we need to do things our own way. No more questions, more action…no one knows you better than you know yourself. You know what to do, you just forgot that.
